If your school offers a health class, think about what purpose that class serves in your curriculum. We know kids are going to make their own choices, and the best thing to do is prepare them for the world ahead by giving them the education and resources to act safely. AI in the classroom is following a similar path. Banning these tools from the classroom does not entirely stop students from opening ChatGPT or Gemini after school to help with their homework. It just means they will continue to use these tools without ever being taught how to use them well.

For adults, cognitive offloading to AI is usually motivated by efficiency. For a fourteen-year-old, it's a different story. The decision-making parts of their brain are still forming, and if the AI does the thinking before their natural thinking happens, those brain muscles never get their chance to grow. Gemini, along with other LLMs, are designed to provide an answer to every question. That's how it was built and the role it was designed to play. However, that job is better suited for an adult, not a student whose own job is to learn how to be an independent thinker.

Four out of five middle and high school students in the United States report using AI to complete their school work (AI Index Report, Stanford 2026). And that number is projected to only rise.

Students are entering a world that will expect them to prompt effectively, catch a hallucination before it becomes a citation, question an output instead of trusting it, and exercise real judgment with these tools. That is AI fluency.

Everything in schools today falls into one of three buckets: AI tutoring platforms, teacher prep tools, or an LLM like Gemini. None of these solutions prepare students to develop a critical eye towards AI fluency. AI tutoring platforms and teacher prep tools only govern the usage a teacher already anticipated. LLMs capture the other usage, but with zero guardrails so it feels like the wild west.
